The Toronto Browncoats: Doing Good Works.

Yes, we are doing it again!

We've got a new theatre just about booked and we are now beginning to look for donations. Running a screening is an expensive proposition. Last year over $2,000 was paid out before the screening to cover costs. The money was recouped but it was still not an ideal way to run an event.
The Organizing Committee paid for a lot of things out of their own pockets and donated most of the auction and door prize items and that can't continue either.
So, we will soon be running events to raise money to cover the expenses. You will also see a Donation button on the blog. You won't be able to get a receipt because:
a. the money is going to run the event
b. Equality Now is not a registered charity in Canada.

We hope that you will donate anyway.

Thank you!
You did it.
You made the Can't Stop The Serenity screening in Toronto the best yet.
One Hundred more people attended this year than last! The auction was wild and fun and the movie itself was a joy to watch in a room with 275 other browncoats - or those who soon would be!

The bills are still coming in, and so is some of the profit so we have no total yet. We'll announce it as soon as we can.

Thank you to those who worked so hard to make it happen. To those who spread the word. To those who donated. To those who came and bought. And bought. And bought. ;)

Thank you.

UPDATE: 5,600!! Yes, this is how much was donated to Equality Now from the Toronto Can't Stop the Serenity. Well done!!!

More great autographed items.
Take a look at this picture. Can you recognize all the signatures? Jonathan Woodward, sure. And Morena's. Ron Glass's is clear to read, as is Christina Hendrick's. But how about Michael Fairman's? (Yes, that is 2 of the Firefly Villains we have there.) and how about the lovely Nectar Rose?
Or the singer of the Firefly theme, Mr. Sonny Rhodes himself?
And whose signature is tucked down beneath Jonathan's? Why it's Robert Lee - the Fruity Oaty Bar guy himself.
You won't find this assortment of autographs anywhere else.
See you Saturday.
Three days left!
Have you got what you need?
The Address? (551 Mount Pleasant)
The Time? (Doors open at 1:00)
Cash? (Tickets are $12.00,get you in the door to see the movie AND give you a chance at very nice door prizes including custom Tshirts, Serenity Action figures, Jayne hats, and a DVD player! (to name just a few). The cash also allows you to pay for that wonderful auction item you just know you want to win.
All Your Friends? (You don't want them to miss out, do you?)
An Appetite? (For the shindig afterwards)

Now here is
something you won't
see everyday!

This auction item was given only to those lucky few who attended James Marster's CD launch for his latest album, Like a Waterfall. Sure, the album can be bought anywhere but the picture is an exclusive. And they are both signed.
Many thanks to Steve Himber, James' manager for donating this one.

A Second Auction.

Modeller extraordinaire Alex has spent 2 years of his life making a scale model of Serenity from scratch. It does exactly what you would expect a Firefly class ship to do - the side engines light up, it rotates where it should and it's big! The small Serenity is the QMX version, for comparison.Add Image
This amazing piece will be auctioned off on eBay with all proceeds to benefit Equality Now. We'll let you know when the auction starts.
For more pictures and information, visit Alex's website.

For Sale and Ideas Exchange

We're adding new ideas to this year's screening. As well as the Tshirts, we also have 2 size posters for sale and some mugs! These mugs are selling for only $10.00 and since quantities are limited, we expect they will sell out quickly.

The posters will be in "Movie Poster " size (24X 36) and in the smaller 11X17 size. All based on this year's striking design.

This will also be your chance to hook up with just the people you've been looking for. Need more people for your Serenity RPG? Want an authentic Jayne hat or a custom T? We are encouraging those offering stuff and those looking for stuff (or people!) to hook up via a bulletin board we will have up in the theatre.

Our sponsors are generous.

The Toronto screening is lucky that we have businesses willing to donate great items to the Can't Stop the Serenity screening. Pixel Barrel has donated this magnificent River Triumphant stature. There are only 1,000 in existence.

FireflyCargoBay has given us a Firefly inspired throw (blanket) that has to be seen to be believed. It's perfect for cuddling up in as you watch Firefly yet again.

Ma Cobb's Hat Shoppe is well known for its authentic style Jayne hats. We've got two of them.

And they just keep coming!

This hand etched glass picture of Jayne was signed by Adam Baldwin when he visited the Canadian Browncoats Fan Table at SFX in Toronto, the month before Serenity came out.

There isn't another one like it anywhere. And it is going to be auctioned off after the screening of Serenity on June 21st.

More Auction items and Door Prizes

We have so many great items this year that we are bundling some of them into themed packages. Since everyone deserves a chance to take home something, we are putting some extra nice things into the door prize bundles and making sure that the auction has something for every budget.

Do you see the CD on the right - the one with Badger's hat? That is one of the few CDs in existence of the radio drama "Badger's World" as heard on the podcast The Signal.
Nick Edwards who writes and performs in Badger's World kindly gave the Toronto Can't Stop the Serenity a copy and we promptly got Mark Sheppard to sign it - which he did - complete with a short review written as Badger.

More to come- watch this space!

Auction items

For the last year the Toronto Browncoats have been working hard to have even better auction items than last year - and that was quite a challenge.
We think you will agree that we have done it though. We got autographs from both the main cast of Firefly and Serenity and from the more minor characters.

Adam Baldwin, Ron Glass, Morena Baccarin, sure, we have those - and went to conventions in 4 countries to get them!
But what about Jonathan Woodward, Nectar Rose or Michael Fairman?
Even more rare, how many people do you know own the autograph of Sonny Rhodes who sang the Firefly theme? These could be yours! The auction will be held immediately after the screening. Cash only and bring lots of it because...
This is just the beginning.

What is 'Can't Stop the Serenity'?

Since 2006 cities across the world have shown Joss Whedon's movie, Serenity to raise money for his favourite charity, Equality Now.
On June 23rd, 2005, (not perhaps coincidentally, Joss Whedon's birthday) cities were treated to a special advance screening of the unfinished movie, which was released in Sept of that year.
The next year, Serenity Now/Equality Now, also known as Can't Stop the Serenity
got started. On or around June 23rd, people come together to see Serenity on the big screen again. Over $160,000 has been raised since 2006.
In Toronto, June 21st is the day. We raised $4,800.00 last year, more than double what we had done the year before. Just wait to see what we can do this year!

Details will be posted as they come available. Tickets will go on sale as soon as we have several confirmations in place.

Can't Stop the Serenity 2008 in Toronto

The Toronto Browncoats are doing it again. Along with cities around the world we are showing Joss Whedon's movie Serenity as a fundraiser for the charity Equality Now.
The date has been picked - June 21
and the theatre booked- The Regent Theatre on Mount Pleasant.
This is the lovely old theatre we used last year.

We are working on plans to make this event even more fun than last year. Stay tuned!
