$4,800.00 to Equality Now!!!
That is more than twice what Toronto raised the first year. Thanks to everyone who donated items for the door prizes and the auction. And a very big thanks to all of those who came. We didn't fill the theatre but it felt pretty full and the excitement was palpable.
Just wait till we do it again next year!

No more advanced ticket sales.

Effective immediately, we are not selling advanced tickets anymore. They can still be bought at the door. It is a 400 seat theatre so chances are very good that you will be able to get a ticket with no problem.
See you tomorrow!

The Door Prizes!

At last - this is not fact a complete list because we have more than one of some things such as the Serenity DVD and the Mal comic and Jayne Hat but this will certainly give you an idea!
And before you drool over the door prizes, let me tell you how it is going to work.

As soon as the movie is over, the volunteers will spring into action and spread the prizes over the stage at the front. We will draw a number and if you are a winner, race, don't walk to the front, have your ticket verified then choose a prize. Don't take too long because as soon as I call your number and we know we have a winner, I'm calling the next number, and they too will be racing down to pick a prize.
But you must have your ticket verified first before choosing a prize.

Ok. Onto the list!

This is what the flag from Firefly Cargo Bay looks like in action. Isn't it great? This is one of the auction items. Just a reminder - we start with a silent auction which stops as the movie starts. Then it resumes as a live auction, picking up where it left off silently.
See you Saturday!

Yes, There's more!
How about taking home a Sony Home Theatre? This is the DAV-DX255 model with a five-disc, slot loading DVD 5.1 Surround Sound system. You place the highest bid and it's yours.
Please note, due to the size of the Sony System, it will not be at the screening and arrangements will have to be made to pick it up.

And one more, wonderful prize.
Greg Edmundson has signed a copy of the Firefly soundtrack for us. For YOU! If you win it.

So there it is, folks.

The silent auction starts at 1:00 when the doors open. At 1:40 the silent auction is over, with the bidding resuming as a live auction after the movie. The highest bids of the silent auction will become the starting bids for the live auction.

Cash only. Sorry, no debit, no credit cards, no cheques. We're fans, not a store!

Next, up, the door prizes!

Why the screening matters.

On May 20th Joss Whedon posted a blog on Whedonesque here.
It is heart-wrenching and painful to read. He says "Last month seventeen year old Dua Khalil was pulled into a crowd of young men, some of them (the instigators) family, who then kicked and stoned her to death." And they recorded it on their cell phones.

This is the sort of thing that Equality Now is fighting. That we are fighting.
What can you do?
Come to a screening - in Toronto if you are close, or to any of the other many cities doing this. All of our profits are going to Equality Now.
Read the Blog and link to it. Discuss what happened. Get the word out.
Buy one of the shirts which lexigeek has created. Proceeds are going to Equality Now.
We can make a difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to get tickets?
  1. Buy them at the next shindig - when we see Nathan Fillion's Waitress. Details here.
  2. Pay for them via Pay Pal. Link at the side.
  3. Buy them at the door. We have a 400 seat theatre. I hope we will sell out but since most people are buying them on June 23rd, we won't know till the day of the screening.
What about the Tshirts?

We are about to send in our order. Knowing that many people are coming to the screening who will not see any of these messages, we are ordering extras. Getting the Word Out.
The Toronto screening has some very talented volunteers to have taken the gorgeous work by Lexigeek and made it our own. Now we just need to get it out there - in print, on poles, on line.

Saturday, March 17, 2007

Last year we got some great items from people to have as Door prizes. This year we are looking for more. We have some cool ones already but some of them are so very shiny that we've decided that we will have an auction for them.
If you have anything you would like to donate, please drop us a line.
Equality Now thanks you!

Equality Now is an amazing charity. Not only is it Joss Whedon's charity of choice but I think it might become yours as well once you take a look at all the work they do.

Sunday, March 04, 2007

We have a print.

The main things are set. We have a print of Serenity and a movie theatre to show it in. We have some great prizes and are looking for more.
Now we need to get the word out and fill that 400 seat theatre.

Sunday, February 25, 2007

We have a theatre.
June 23rd. The Regent Theatre
551 Mount Pleasant Ave.
in Toronto.
We are still working on the exact time for the movie but we have the theatre for 4 hours, so will have time to do everything we want to.
Next up, confirmation from Universal that we have the film.
Stay tuned.

Changing names.
Last year we called the effort, Serenity Now, Equality Now. There was a decision to change the name to Can't Stop the Serenity this year, even though I believe that sounds as though our purpose to get a sequel to the movie Serenity. That isn't it at all. The June 23rd screening is to raise funds for Equality Now and that is it. Period.
Serenity Now/Equality Now or Can't Stop the Serenity. Same dif.
We're just happy to be doing good work.

Sunday, January 14, 2007

A new year and a new screening of Serenity. Once again Toronto and probably about 50 other cities will be screening Joss Whedon's Serenity as a fund raiser for Equality Now. This is part of a larger effort, called "Can't stop the Serenity".
Stay tuned for details.
